Howard, a duck the size of a human man, is accidentally brought to Earth through a laser beam in an experiment being performed by a Cleveland physicist Dr. Walter Jenning, and his assistant Phil Blumburtt. Howard ends up in Cleveland, where he rescues singer Beverly Switzer from a group of thugs. Beverly and Phil are friends, and when the government is told about Howard, she helps Phil and Dr. Jenning hide Howard from the authorities until they can get him back home – but then an evil being arrives through the laser beam and takes possession of Dr. Jenning's body, putting Howard, Beverly, and Phil in a fight for their lives.
A scientific experiment unknowingly brings extraterrestrial life forms to the Earth through a laser beam. First is the cigar smoking drake Howard from the duck's planet. A few kids try to keep him from the greedy scientists and help him back to his planet. But then a much less friendly being arrives through the beam…
It depends on what kind of movie you are into to whether or not you would like this title. On that same note, it too depends on whether or not you love to laugh in the face of stupidity, because &quot;Howard the Duck&quot; is just that, stupidity.<br/><br/>A film about a duck from another planet, who is accidentally trans-placed into our own Earth. The plot was well undeveloped, and I think they knew that when filming, but it went unchanged. The acting was well under a Hollywood fare.<br/><br/>Tim Robbins and Emma Thompson star in this infamous tale along with Jeffrey Jones of &quot;Ferris Bueller&#39;s Day Off (1986)&quot; fame. I believe that if given the proper treatment in writing, the film may have done well better.
Howard was an inspiration. A hero. Best Marvel film ever. Best film of 1986. Best performance of Tim Robbins&#39; career. Cherry Bomb was the best 80&#39;s band of them all. Howard sharing a bed with Lea Thompson&#39;s Beverly was more life changing than Slave Leia. &#39;86 Howard (along with Ed Gale&#39;s signature voice) should have been there in the stinger for that well-received but lackluster 2014 film. Very dark day for all ducks on all planets.
Pic lapses into formulaic predictability with nearly an hour of frenetic chase scenes and technically perfect explosions from Industrial Light & Magic. Action comes sporadically alive in scenes with scientist Jones, who becomes possessed by the spirit of an evil Dark Warlord that entered his body during the same fateful mishap that brought Howard to Earth. There is an abundant amount of special effects wizardry that emanates mostly from Jones as he transforms into a monster, but it is not spectacularly unique enough to distinguish this film from other, more entertaining, sci-fi thrillers.
Two scenes had to be cut to get a PG rating for the theatrical release of the movie (condom in Howard&#39;s wallet / tentacle tongue in the cigarette lighter socket). This version was then released by CIC Video in 1987 on VHS with the same rating. The later PG DVD release by Metrodome was cut more heavily. All scenes with sexual content were removed, among others. But an uncut DVD with a BBFC 12 rating was also released in the UK.
